4 Simple Ways to Use Your Loft Space

Although it is often one of the biggest spaces in your house for floor space, your loft often goes underused and underappreciated. Your loft is perfect for housing your belongings that are only used occasionally but are still important, such as Christmas decorations, luggage, and mementoes.

Here are some tips to help you utilise your loft space.

4 Simple Ways to Use Your Loft Space

Improve your area with lighting

As your loft is at the top of your house, there is a huge amount of potential for natural lighting to enhance your space. Installing a skylight can help to open up the space and reduce the need for artificial light whenever you need to go up there. In turn, this will reduce the amount of electricity you are using when you turn on the lights.

If you were planning on using your loft space as a living area as well as storage, a skylight can help to increase the amount of natural light you can get which is especially important in the cooler months. Equally, in the summer months, being able to open these windows and ventilate the space will prevent it from being too hot.

If a skylight isn’t an option for you, choosing different bulbs can make a difference. LED bulbs are much more energy efficient than regular bulbs, so you can save on your electricity bill still.

Optimising your storage space

A loft space is an ideal space to create that walk-in wardrobe that you have always dreamed about.

Designing your walk-in wardrobes is the best way to maximize the space you have. You can store some of your clothing in the eaves which is a commonly underused space. Having personalized fittings also allows you to work around any awkward spaces such as chimney breasts and water tanks.

If you are looking to make the loft look better than clever designing can help to do that as well. Adding mirrors to reflect the natural light that is in there can help to open up the space. Mirrors will also allow this walk-in wardrobe to be a dressing area as well, rather than taking clothes in and out of the loft.

Raise the floor

If you have the space, creating a mezzanine level in your loft is a great way to create extra storage space.

You could raise the floor of half the loft space and have large pull-out drawers underneath. These would be good for storing bulky items such as Christmas decorations or camping gear. Another benefit would be that items that could potentially be damaged by the dust or climate conditions when left exposed in the loft can be stored safely and reduce that risk.

If you are using the loft as a bedroom, you could make the mezzanine level a bed space with some small steps leading up to it. Whoever is living there will feel like their room has separate spaces for sleeping and relaxing.

Create a play area for your kids

One idea is to create play area for your children where they can play and store their toys. If you don’t want all the clutter down in the main living spaces, moving the playthings upstairs could be a great solution. You can even make it cozy by adding some fun, colorful rugs and bean bags or pillows!

With kids, it’s tempting to organize things neatly into boxes or baskets but why not experiment with design and get creative? Paint the walls with cheerful colors, hang pictures on them, add some bunting if you like. Anything that encourages imagination should go into this play area. Your kids will love it!
