Clever Water Heater Maintenance Tips

A working water heater is an essential device in one’s home. Without a functioning water heater, taking a bath during the cold season can be a chore. Companies like Rapid Hot Water Lic can provide services to provide a replacement for water heating machines that are beyond repair. But for those whose heating devices are still functional, here are several remedies that you can try to prolong the function of your reliable heater at home.

Check the TPR Valve

You need to regularly check the water heater’s temperature-pressure-release (TPR) valve to check if it can still release water without the risk of exploding if the pressure or temperature turns becomes elevated. To do this, you must turn off both the unit’s power and the cold-water supply valve. Then put a bucket underneath the pipe linked to the TPR valve located at the top or side of the tank. Once done, raise the tab of the valve to release some water then let go. If the water continues to flow, you have to drain the tank partly and unscrew the busted valve using a pipe wrench. If you learned that the TPR valve is already broken, you must replace it with a new one immediately.

Test the Anode Rod

The anode rod plays a significant role in your water heater, but it can quickly wear out after several years. To check if this part of your water heater is still working, you must place a hose to the drain cok of the water tank to release several gallons of water. Then fit a socket measuring 1 and 1/16 inch on the rod’s head that you can find on top of your heater then unscrew it. If you noticed that the rod has calcium coating, you must replace it with a new one.

Remove Sediments inside the Tank

Clean up the water heater tank regularly to make sure that it will last for a long time. You can do this by draining any leftover water in the tank by transferring it into a bucket. Once the water is gone, you must reach out towards the bottom of the tank to stir up the sediment. You can do this by opening the cold water supply valve for a short time. Drain then repeat the procedures until all the water coming out from the hose becomes clear. Finish this by closing the drain cok, refill the tank again with water, then turn the power back on.

Adjust the Temperature When Not In Use

If you plan to stay away from home from a time, you must always adjust the temperature to 120 degrees using a flathead screwdriver. It will help you save up on your energy costs by at least 5 per cent. You may also lower down the thermostat to its lowest setting if you will be away for over three days.

Usually, water heaters work well for at least a decade or more. But you can extend its lifespan if you know how to take care of it regularly. By allocating several minutes of water heater maintenance at least once a year, you will save you a lot of money from buying a new one.
